This is a clear sign that closed litter boxes aren’t their cup of tee.
One thing you should never do is to force your cat to use the box. This way you make your cat create negative neuroassociations with the box. It will begin to pee on the cover and refuse to enter at any costs.
If it pees on the lid, you should immediately take it off, and clean it carefully. If you don’t it would be a threat for your and your cat’s health.
